Para hacerles la vida más fácil, dos jóvenes madrileños de apenas 20 años, Miguel Coello y Gonzalo Fuentes, han creado Metrociego, una aplicación móvil que permite el guiado por el subterráneo de la capital. La idea surge de la propia necesidad de Coello, quien padece una enfermedad degenerativa de la retina. “Estaba harto de tener que preguntar a alguien cada vez que cogía el metro, así que empecé a tomar nota de cada recorrido que hacía para aprendérmelos de memoria”, cuenta el cofundador de la app.

Su funcionamiento es muy sencillo. Al abrir la aplicación, el usuario deberá seleccionar la estación de origen (actualmente funciona en 32), la boca de entrada por la que desea acceder, la estación de destino, el transbordo a realizar y, por último, la boca de salida. Con estas opciones, Metrociego genera un texto que puede leerse o escucharse a través de un sistema de narración. En él se detallan aquellos elementos del recorrido que se han de tener en cuenta como el tipo de escalera (fija o mecánica), número de escalones, los giros que se deben hacer, dónde se sitúan los tornos de entrada y salida, la distancia al andén, etcétera. “Es importante conocer todos estos detalles para que no te sorprenda nada”, apunta Coello.

De momento, Metrociego está solo disponible para iOS porque, como explican sus creadores, “el sistema de narración de iOS, Voiceover, funciona mejor”. “Había que empezar por algo y escogimos este sistema operativo porque es cierto que la mayoría de personas con discapacidad visual utilizamos iPhone, pero nos encantaría que estuviera disponible también para Android, aunque eso depende de la financiación”. Coello y Fuentes continúan actualizando la app con nuevas estaciones, una labor lenta que “podría acelerarse si hubiese una involucración institucional”. “Podríamos completar rápidamente las estaciones de Madrid y llevar la aplicación a otras ciudades para que otras personas se beneficiasen de ella también”, concluye Coello.
