La compañía francesa Pixium Vision (París) ha anunciado la primera implantación y activación en un humano de su sistema PRIMA Bionic Vision, la tercera generación de su sistema de visión artificial IRIS, que ahora cambia de nombre y pasa a ser un implante subretiniano inalámbrico fotovoltaico miniaturizado con una mayor resolución.
El hito ha sido llevado a cabo por un equipo dirigido por el oftalmólogo y cirujano Dr. Yannick Le Mer, y forma parte de un estudio clínico que se está llevando a cabo en la «Fondation Ophtalmologique Rothschild» y en el «Hôpital des Quinze-Vingt» en París, cuyo objetivo es evaluar la seguridad y el rendimiento de PRIMA en la obtención de la percepción visual central en pacientes que han perdido la visión debido a la degeneración macular seca atrófica asociada a la edad (DMAE).
Lo que se consigue es una estimulación eléctrica de la retina que genera unos fosfenos o patrones luminosos, que se han de aprender a interpretar. Por supuesto, cuantos más electrodos tenga el chip implantado, mayor será la resolución de los patrones luminosos obtenidos.
PRIMA, aparte de tener una mayor resolución, presenta otras diferencias interesantes con respecto a la anterior generación, como la implantación subretinal y que ahora es totalmente inalámbrica, con alimentación fotovoltaica a través de luz infrarroja.
PRIMA es un implante subretinal miniaturizado de nueva generación totalmente inalámbrico. El implante es un chip microfotovoltaico de 2×2 milímetros y 30 micras de espesor, equipado con 378 electrodos. Este chip, implantado bajo la retina a través de un procedimiento quirúrgico poco invasivo, actúa como un diminuto panel solar que se alimenta con luz infrarroja pulsada a través de un proyector miniaturizado que va integrado en las gafas usadas por el sujeto intervenido.
¿Cómo funciona exactamente? El sistema está compuesto por unas gafas que incorporan una microcámara y el proyector de luz infrarroja, una unidad de procesamiento/control de bolsillo que va conectada a las gafas por medio de un cable, y el chip que se implanta dentro del ojo.
